    Coastal North Carolina is home to numerous species of birds, including many that migrate through this area on their way back to their wintering grounds further south. Join Becky Skiba with the NC Wildlife Resource Commission and Andy Fairbanks with Halyburton Park to explore the various habitats in the Wilmington, Carolina Beach, and Ft. Fisher areas to identify warblers, raptors, waders, shorebirds, and many other species. Transportation will be provided to the observation sites. We will meet at the park at 8:45am.     302096 - Black Bears Trip

    We will visit Lake Mattamuskeet NWR, home to thousands of Tundra Swan and Snow Geese in the winter, to observe a variety of migratory waterfowl on Friday. We will stay overnight at the Eastern 4-H center in Columbia, N.C. Friday night, a 1.5 hour presentation will provide an overview of Eastern N.C. wildlife with a focus on Black Bears. Pocosin Lakes is home to two endangered species, the red wolf and the red-cockaded woodpecker, and one of the largest populations of American black bears in North America. On Saturday we will depart before sunrise for Pocosin Lakes to observe Black Bears and potentially other wildlife and birds.

    Are you a birder? Do you want to learn how to use E-bird? This is your chance! Join Halyburton staff, Andy Fairbanks, Jessica Stitt, and Morgan Freese, in a 4 hour Criteria II hands on workshop. Learn how to use E-bird using the app and the website, and this will include outdoor experience as well. This workshop counts towards Criteria II for the NCEE Certification.
